The Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. The 29-year-old signed a one-year deal with Minnesota after the Arizona Cardinals released him. His arrival moves J.J. McCarthy into the No. 2 spot.

Minnesota was looking to upgrade its quarterback situation after falling to 9-8 and missing the playoffs in 2025. This was a marked drop from its 14-3 record in 2024, frustrating Vikings fans who watched a promising roster underachieve. The offense was inconsistent last year, as McCarthy posted a painful 35.6 QBR while throwing 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. Opposing defenses also sacked McCarthy 27 times in just 10 starts. This was no recipe for success.

Murray gives an immediate upgrade for the Vikings offense. During his time with the Cardinals, the former No. 1 overall pick showed a high ceiling and an ability to improvise and make big plays when the pocket broke down. His mobility and experience should provide some much-needed stability to an offense looking to return to the postseason.

Kyler Murray Offers Low Risk, High Reward

While Murray has proven he can succeed in the NFL, injuries remain a concern. A foot injury limited him to only five games in 2025, one year after he started all 17 games for Arizona. For a Minnesota offense that surrendered 60 sacks last season, durability at quarterback should be a significant consideration.

However, the Vikings have limited their financial risk. Because Arizona still owes Murray $36.8 million in guaranteed money from his previous contract, Minnesota was able to sign him to a one-year deal for the league minimum.

That gives the Vikings an experienced starter at minimal cost. It also leaves resources available to strengthen other areas of the roster. If Murray misses time, Minnesota can turn back to McCarthy. Until then, the Vikings can develop McCarthy without placing the entire offense on his shoulders.

This is a prove-it season for both quarterbacks. Murray can rebuild his value before returning to free agency. He also has another chance to establish himself as an NFL starter. Meanwhile, McCarthy must prove that he can still become Minnesota’s long-term answer. The Vikings selected him 10th overall in 2024.

Given Murray’s recent injury history, McCarthy may still get another opportunity. Minnesota is a nine-win team trying to return to the playoffs. Having two affordable options makes Murray a gamble worth taking.
