RIP Robert Duvall: Remembering His Iconic Roles in Sports-Related Movies

Hollywood lost a true icon this week. Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor known for his commanding presence and incredible range, passed away peacefully at his home in Virginia on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at age 95. His wife, Luciana, shared the news: he went surrounded by love after a remarkable career spanning over seven decades.

While Duvall is legendary for classics like The Godfather (as the calm, calculating Tom Hagen), Apocalypse Now (the unforgettable Lt. Col. Kilgore with his “smell of napalm” line), and Tender Mercies (his Best Actor Oscar win as a broken-down country singer), he also delivered some unforgettable performances in films tied to sports.

Some of his standout sports-related roles include:

The Natural (1984)

Duvall plays Max Mercy, the sharp, no-nonsense sportswriter who spots the “natural” talent in Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) when the mysterious middle-aged ballplayer shows up out of nowhere. Mercy is skeptical at first but becomes a key voice recognizing Hobbs’ mythical abilities.

It’s one of the greatest baseball movies ever—full of magic, heartbreak, and home runs—and Duvall’s grounded, cynical edge grounds the fairy-tale vibe. (Often ranked among the top sports films of all time.)

A Shot at Glory (2000)

Duvall stars as Gordon McLeod, the aging, stubborn Scottish soccer coach fighting to save his small-town club from being relocated by a greedy American owner (Michael Keaton). He must unite a troubled star player (real-life footballer Ally McCoist) and overcome family drama to chase the Scottish Cup.

Duvall’s performance—complete with a spot-on Scottish accent—is hailed as one of his most underrated. It’s a heartfelt underdog story about loyalty, legacy, and one last shot at glory in football (soccer).

Seven Days in Utopia (2011) –

Duvall plays Johnny Crawford, a wise, eccentric rancher and former golf pro who mentors a young golfer (Lucas Black) after his career implodes in a public meltdown and he accidentally drives through the rancher’s fence. Duvall takes on the “project” of making the young man love golf again, something his father had stripped from him.

It’s an inspiring, faith-based drama about second chances and life lessons.

Other Sports Films

In 2005, Duvall popped up in lighter fare like Kicking & Screaming. He played Will Ferrell’s over-the-top soccer dad/coach rival. The two wound up squashing their personal rivalry, but the entire premise of the film is Ferrell getting too caught up in the high of coaching a winning team.

Duvall had a small role in the football-themed 12 Mighty Orphans (2021, reuniting with Martin Sheen in a true-story high school football tale).

He also served as the crew chief in the racing drama Days of Thunder (1990) with Tom Cruise. Duvall helped Cruise transition from one racing world to another, while overcoming the fear of an accident that took out his top track rival.

Rest in peace to one of the all-time greats. His performances will continue to inspire fans for generations.
