John Cena teased making an announcement on Saturday that would shake the very foundation of WWE. What he said was arguably true. At WWE Backlash, Cena showed up to announce a new title, a new tournament, and a new, unique way to crown a winner.

WWE and NXT stars will compete throughout the night to determine the winner, and it sounds like voting and the winner’s selection will all take place at one special event.

Calling it the John Cena Classic, he wanted to give an opportunity for any superstar on any brand to earn the chance to win a championship that he’s personally attached his name to. The rules and matches weren’t detailed during his promo, but what was made clear is that the fans (WWE Universe) would vote on the winners. And, that competitors didn’t actually have to win their match to earn the fan vote. Every participant qualifies, and for the first time in history, a Superstar might not win their match, but that person can still win the John Cena Classic Championship.

The idea seems to be that fans will choose (or WWE will offer a shot) to several competitors, and the fans will get a chance to vote on who resonates with them. If the next Oba Femi or Je’Von Evans is out there, it will be up to the WWE Universe to help discover them.

This appears to be WWE’s way of letting fans vote to determine who the next megastar will be.

It sounds like both women and men will be eligible. That likely means the number of votes will come into play. Much like an American Idol-type situation, the fewest votes likely mean elimination — although that was not made clear.

He wants this to be an annual event.
