Will Tarik Skubal’s Price Tag Be the Only Thing That Matters?

There’s a little more reason for Detroit Tigers fans to pay attention to Tarik Skubal’s free agency. The former Tigers ace is expected to command a massive contract, but some early industry talk suggests the final price might not reach the eye-popping $400 million figure being discussed.

That doesn’t make him inexpensive. Not even close. But it could make a reunion a little more realistic for a Detroit organization that knows exactly what it gave up when it traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2026 deadline.

Detroit drafted Skubal in 2018, developed him into a back-to-back American League Cy Young winner, and ultimately couldn’t reach a long-term agreement. Now the pitcher who once hoped to spend his entire career in Detroit is back on the open market.

The Numbers Could Change Detroit’s Thinking

According to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, agent Scott Boras is targeting the $325 million guarantee Yoshinobu Yamamoto received, while some executives have suggested Skubal could command as much as $400 million. One executive offered a more cautious view, suggesting that although the price will be enormous, Skubal probably won’t reach that highest figure.

His age, 30, and recent elbow work could influence the length of the contract. A 12-year commitment may be difficult to justify, and some teams reportedly have reservations about going even 10 years. For Detroit, that distinction matters. A contract below $400 million is still a huge investment, but it could change the conversation about whether bringing Skubal back is financially possible.

Detroit Has a Bigger Decision Than Simply Signing an Ace

Here’s where things get interesting. The Tigers have spent the past two seasons building a contender around their farm system and selective free-agent additions. They’ve shown they can develop talent. But bringing back Skubal would be a different kind of statement.

It’s one thing to build a competitive team with young players and carefully chosen additions. It’s another to commit a substantial portion of your payroll to one player because you believe he can help take the organization to the next level.

Skubal has spoken warmly about Detroit, and there’s a natural connection between the pitcher and the organization that drafted him. But sentiment won’t win this negotiation. The Tigers will have to decide whether the investment makes sense for the team they’re building.

The Dodgers and Mets Should Also Be in the Running for Skubal

The Dodgers and Mets are expected to be serious competitors, and the December 1 lockout deadline could push teams to move quickly. A reunion isn’t guaranteed, and a slightly lower price doesn’t make Skubal affordable for everyone. But Detroit helped turn him into one of baseball’s best pitchers. Now it has a chance to decide whether he’s worth bringing home.

For Tigers fans, that’s a pretty interesting offseason possibility.
