The LeBron James sweepstakes have everyone around the basketball world on edge, and the drama ramped up to a whole other level late Tuesday night.
That was thanks to one fan scouring the Miami Heat’s YouTube page and coming across an interesting livestream scheduled for July 27 titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference.”
NBA fans were buzzing once the news made its way to X (formerly Twitter), though ESPN insider Shams Charania has since learned that it was a mistake by the team’s social media team, which quickly deleted the video from its page.
“The Miami Heat posted a link to a scheduled live stream titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference” followed by the date July 27 to its YouTube channel in what a team spokesperson said was a mistake.
The spokesperson told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday that the club’s social media department was preparing for the possibility of James’ signing and mistakenly posted the link to the team’s YouTube page. The post was later deleted,”
The 41-year-old LeBron is, of course, a UFA having played out his two-year, $104 million contract extension that he signed with the Lakers in 2024. He averaged 20.9 points per game, 7.2 assists per game, and 6.1 rebounds per game in 60 games played last season.
It’s hard to say how much we should read into the ordeal, though what is for certain is that Miami is squarely in the mix and potentially even a frontrunner for James.
That being said, we’ve known all along that the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and perhaps the Golden State Warriors are his only true desired destinations, so this doesn’t change much in the end.
What it does do, however, is add even more drama and intrigue to the decision, which seems to be just the way James likes it.
