McDavid Is Breaking Gretzky Records Again. Are We Getting Used to It?

Some records are records; others make you stop and think for a moment. The Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid reaching 30 assists in just 15 games belongs in the second category.

The Oilers captain has become the fastest player in NHL history to reach that mark, beating Wayne Gretzky’s previous record of 16 games, set in 1984-85. That’s quite a name to pass, even for a player who has spent much of his career being compared with the Great One.

But here’s something else worth considering. Are we getting a little too accustomed to McDavid doing things that should leave us shaking our heads?

McDavid Keeps Finding Another Gear

The record came during Edmonton’s 4-1 win over the New York Rangers on Sunday. McDavid scored early, then added an assist on Evan Bouchard’s power-play goal to reach 30 helpers. He’s now scored at least one point in all 15 games this season, extending his NHL-record opening streak.

His numbers are remarkable: nine goals and 30 assists for 39 points. He’s producing at a pace that makes you wonder what might be possible if he keeps it close to this level.

And yet, there’s something familiar about it. We watch McDavid skate through traffic, create space where there doesn’t seem to be any, and make plays that other players might not even see. Then he does it again the next night.

Perhaps that’s the danger of having a player this good. The extraordinary starts to feel ordinary.

Gretzky Is Still the Name That Matters

Passing one of Gretzky’s records is a useful reminder of the company McDavid is keeping. Gretzky set the old mark more than 40 years ago, during one of hockey’s most productive periods. McDavid has now found a way to get there faster.

I’m not suggesting every record makes McDavid a better player than Gretzky, or that we need to settle that debate every time he accomplishes something. Different eras bring different challenges. But watching McDavid chase records that once seemed untouchable is part of what makes his career so interesting.

Oilers Fans Are Watching Something Remarkable with McDavid

Oilers fans know what they have. The rest of us should probably take a little more time to appreciate it, too.

McDavid is 29, still producing at an extraordinary level, and still finding new ways to surprise us. Maybe the best part isn’t the record itself. It’s that we get to watch him keep adding to a career that already belongs among the great ones.
