Gavin McKenna is Officially a Toronto Maple Leaf

Justin Bieber made the announcement we all knew was coming: Gavin McKenna, welcome to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After months of debate—or lackthereof—between McKenna and the rest of the field, new GM John Chayka stuck with the consensus, selecting the prospect who has been viewed as the golden goose of the 2026 draft class for years.

The dynamic offensive winger now joins a Maple Leafs team looking to make a quick return to contention after a surprising 2025-26 season that ended with an even more surprising draft lottery win to land him.

McKenna did his rounds with the media after being drafted, and some of his comments will be music to Toronto fans’ ears:

“There’s always going to be pressure in the game. Being a high-end prospect, there’s always going to be pressure on me, so it’s something I’ve kind of just had to learn over the years to deal with. At the end of the day, I’m just playing hockey, the game that I love and grew up playing. So yeah, I’m just going to try to have fun with it.

Just my style of play—I think I’m a player that makes all the players around me better, and I’ll do whatever it takes to win a Stanley Cup. That’s all I want is to win a Stanley Cup in Toronto, so that’s what they can look forward to,”

The 18-year-old McKenna tallied 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) in 35 games played for Penn State last year.

It will be a busy Saturday for the first-overall pick, who will meet the media in the morning before throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Toronto Blue Jays game later in the afternoon.

This is just the start of McKenna’s journey with the Maple Leafs, but so far he’s checked all the boxes on and off the ice and has all the makings of being the next young superstar Toronto has been searching for.
