Every Team Wants Jason Robertson. He Doesn’t Seem to Want Any of Them

Jason Robertson’s trade saga has taken over the NHL offseason, and as of Friday morning, there are more questions than answers.

Robertson rejected a sign-and-trade to the Seattle Kraken that would have made him the second-highest-paid player in the league at $15 million annually on an eight-year deal. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Kraken were granted permission by Dallas to negotiate, but Robertson turned the offer down.

Many believe the decision came down to a simple reason — he didn’t want to play in Seattle — though Washington State’s upcoming 9.9% income tax was also cited as a factor. The Kraken attempted to front-load the deal to minimize the tax hit, but it wasn’t enough.

Seattle wasn’t the only team that came up empty.

Per Jeff Marek, the St. Louis Blues offered a package that included multiple first-round picks to Dallas for Robertson, but he has no interest in signing there long-term. The Blues have since pivoted to Mason McTavish, as they have reportedly put in a competing offer with the New York Rangers for the Anaheim Ducks young center.

Robertson also made it clear he would not sign with Ottawa following the Brady Tkachuk trade, eliminating any possibility of a sign-and-trade or offer sheet with the Senators.

He has also rejected the latest offer from Dallas itself, with the two sides believed to be at least $2 million apart per season. The Stars’ top contract is Mikko Rantanen at $12 million annually, and Dallas had hoped Robertson would land somewhere near that number. Clearly, that’s not going to happen.

So four teams rejected, a massive offer turned down, and the NHL Draft just hours away. Dallas is now circling back to teams that had previously expressed interest in Robertson while simultaneously keeping extension talks alive, per Pierre LeBrun. The Stars are trying to keep every avenue open.

The latest comes from LeBrun, who reports, “Told this morning it’s hard to predict if Robertson moves today or not, so many moving parts right now in all the conversations Dallas has going on him. ICYMI from last night.”

So What Does Jason Robertson Want?

It’s worth noting that the $15 million AAV Robertson rejected from Seattle likely sets the floor for what any deal — trade or extension — will need to look like. Perhaps in Dallas, he’s willing to take a bit less, but the feeling seems to be that it won’t be much.

Whether Robertson gets moved Friday, signs an extension, or heads into the draft weekend unsigned remains genuinely unclear. As one source put it Friday morning, there are simply too many moving parts right now to predict how this one lands.
