“Done Deal”: Raptors Adding Kawhi Leonard via Trade

According to a report by Shams Charania, the trade between the Toronto Raptors and LA Clippers is complete, pending a trade call with the NBA. He reports, “Done deal: The LA Clippers and Raptors have both agreed to complete the trade sending Kawhi Leonard to Toronto for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, one first-round pick swap, and two second-rounders, per ESPN sources.” He added, “The sides will now schedule a trade call.”

It’s a blockbuster deal that had been in the works for some time but was put on hold because of the investigation into Leonard’s contract with the Clippers, which violated the league’s salary cap circumvention rules. 76 days later, the trade is finally done.

Leonard’s team nor the player has agreed to an official extension with the Raptors. There is the promise of one, which led to Toronto feeling comfortable enough to make this move.

Meanwhile, the Clippers are still reeling from the penalties handed down by the NBA.

ESPN reports that the Clippers accepted the penalties, even though owner Steve Ballmer didn’t agree. “Punishments include a $30 million fine and suspension for owner Steve Ballmer (one year), plus suspensions for team president of business operations Gillian Zucker (one year without pay) and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank (six months without pay).”

The Clippers must also forfeit first-round picks in 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032 and 2033. Add the picks sent to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019 to acquire Paul George and secure Leonard’s free-agent signing, and LA will have given up a total of 10 first-rounders to acquire and retain Leonard.”

On Thursday, The New York Times reported that the Justice Department had opened a criminal inquiry into the team’s dealings with Leonard.
