Red Sox Land Adley Rutschman in AL East Blockbuster

After hours of speculation that it could be coming, Adley Rutschman has indeed been traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the American League East division rival Boston Red Sox.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan broke the news on X (formerly Twitter) that the deal would officially be happening, sending the three-time All-Star catcher to Beantown.

“BREAKING: The Boston Red Sox are acquiring three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, sources tell ESPN,”

Fellow insider Ken Rosenthal then shared full details on the massive haul going back to Baltimore, which includes Anthony Eyanson, Enddy Azocar, Kyson Witherspoon, Harold Rivas, and Carlos Narvaez.

“Source confirms to @Britt_Ghiroli the return for Rutschman, as first reported by @jcalvinmeyer. Anthony Eyanson Enddy Azocar Kyson Witherspoon Harold Rivas Carlos Narvaez,”

The 28-year-old Rutschman is playing on the one-year, $7.25 million contract he signed to avoid arbitration with the Orioles in January. He has one more year of team control before potentially becoming a free agent after 2027. He’s hit .251 with eight HRs and 47 RBI in just 67 games played so far this season.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Craig Breslow certainly paid a steep price to acquire Rutschman, which makes you think he has plans of extending the former first-overall pick (2019) long term beyond his current contract.

Eyanson, Witherspoon, and Azocar were the second-, fourth-, and fifth-ranked prospects in Boston’s system, according to MLB.com.

It signals a red-hot Red Sox team pushing its chips all in not just for 2026, but beyond, while the Orioles, who have had yet another disappointing campaign, pull the plug on what once felt like such a promising era led by the likes of Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson.
