Grizzlies to Dillon Brooks: Not Returning “Under Any Circumstances”

According to @ShamsCharania, the Memphis Grizzlies have informed Dillon Brooks he will not be brought back next season “under any circumstances.” Brooks is a pending free agent and the Grizzlies have decided they’d prefer he test his luck and apply his “unique skill set” somewhere else.

Shams Charania writes in The Athletic, “After his tumultuous end to the season, Brooks was told about the Grizzlies’ decision to move on in exit meetings with team officials in recent days, those sources said.” The scribe adds, “Memphis and Brooks discussed in exit meetings that it’s best for both sides to have a fresh start, sources added.”

This all comes on the heels of a series in which Dillon and the Grizzles were booted by the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. During that series, Dillon called LeBron James “old,” “tired,” and suggested he was not as good as he once was. There was even a moment where Dillon stared down the four-time NBA Champion and it only seemed to spark the Lakers. LeBron and his Lakers went on to destroy the Grizzlies by 40 points in Game 6.

To make matters worse, Brooks was personally a train wreck in the series. He punched James in Game 3 and got ejected. He allowed James to hit a game-tying basket in Game 4, and then again missed his assignment in overtime. When he chose not to talk to the media following the loss, he was fined by the NBA to the tune of $25K. The Lakers all but let him shoot at will during the series and his percentages were awful. Intriguingly, he complained about how little he was used on offense, saying, “ I was just there to three-and-D, shoot, and play defense. I got way more to my game than that.”

Clearly, the Grizzlies don’t think so. In fact, they don’t even think the things they asked him to do he does well enough to get another deal. He said he didn’t regret calling out LeBron and the he would continue to be him and do what he does. He’ll just have to do it elsewhere.
