David Pastrnak Acknowledges Growing Urgency to Win After Playoff Exit

Very few expected David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins to even make the playoffs in 2025–26, but that doesn’t take away from the sting of falling short in a first-round series to the Buffalo Sabres.

Friday night’s 4–1 Game 6 loss put an end to an overachieving season for the Bruins, and while there is a lot of good to look back at and build upon moving forward, Pastrnak wasn’t necessarily in the mood for moral victories after being eliminated.

The superstar winger admitted that time is ticking as he approaches his 30s, still searching for that elusive Stanley Cup.

Pastrnak said:

“Of course it’s disappointing. I’m turning 30 in a couple weeks so, I’ve had one sniff at the Cup so far and it gets harder every single year. You don’t want to waste any opportunity… I mean, yeah, of course you want that, and I know they want that. You know, this is the Boston Bruins—they always have the highest standards, and so do we as players,”

The soon-to-be 30-year-old Pastrnak has five years remaining on the eight-year, $90 million extension he signed with the Bruins back in 2023. He produced seven points (three goals, four assists) in six games this postseason after a 100-point (29 goals, 71 assists) regular season.

There is nothing to suggest that Pastrnak has any desire to leave Boston and chase a championship elsewhere, but as he said, the urgency to win with the Bruins is ratcheting up as he gets deeper into his prime.

He, Charlie McAvoy, and Jeremy Swayman make up a very strong core, but to stay competitive in the loaded Atlantic Division, they’ll need youngsters like James Hagens, Fraser Minten, and Mason Lohrei to continue ascending, with the help of management adding more around them on top of that.

Nobody knows that more than Pastrnak, who will ultimately remain the straw that stirs the drink no matter what else is going on in Boston.
