The Toronto Blue Jays’ pitching staff has been all kinds of banged up throughout the first month of the 2026 MLB season, but next week they will be getting a major reinforcement back in the rotation.
Young star Trey Yesavage, who has been on the IL with a shoulder impingement, will soon be activated to make his season debut on Tuesday when the Blue Jays host the rival Boston Red Sox.
Team reporter Ben Nicholson-Smith shared the update provided by manager John Schneider in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday:
“Trey Yesavage will make his season debut Tuesday against the Red Sox as a starting pitcher. Still building up so won’t be a full 100-pitch workload,”
The 22-year-old Yesavage went 1–0 with a 3.21 ERA in three regular-season starts in 2025, before dazzling in the postseason to the tune of a 3–1 record with a 3.58 ERA and 39 strikeouts across five starts. He is currently ranked as the ninth-best overall prospect and best pitching prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com.

Yesavage’s return will be a welcome sight with Toronto currently missing the services of starters Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, Bowden Francis, and Cody Ponce. Kevin Gausman and Dylan Cease have held it down atop the rotation so far, while Eric Lauer and Max Scherzer have had their ups and downs to begin the campaign.
It’s been a difficult start to the season as a whole for the reigning AL champions, so the debut of their brightest young star should generate some excitement and buzz to help get things turned around.
Until then, the Blue Jays will look to finish out their current three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians strong and begin working their way back into the AL Wild Card mix before it’s too late.
