Eagles Refused to Include Young Star in Myles Garrett Trade

The Myles Garrett trade all went down rather quickly on Monday.

First came buzz that a deal was more possible than ever now that June 1 had hit, with three teams — the Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys — connected as landing spots for the superstar pass rusher.

Just a few hours later, Garrett was sent to Los Angeles for a package centered around Jared Verse and draft picks, leaving Eagles and Cowboys fans wondering why they weren’t the ones to land him.

According to reporter Ryan Fowler, Philadelphia’s unwillingness to include its young star defender Jalen Carter took them out of the running in these sweepstakes.

Fowler wrote:

“The Eagles’ interest in Myles Garrett was more than exploratory, per source.

Ultimately, seems like Jared Verse/‘27 1st >>> some combination of Nolan Smith or Jalyx Hunt/combo of picks forced a clear tipping point in talks.

Jalen Carter was a name that arose in talks, I’m told, but zero potential framework revolved around the Eagles’ star up front,”

The 25-year-old Carter had 3 sacks and 33 total tackles across 12 games played during the 2025 season. He has one year remaining on his four-year, $21,806,014 rookie contract signed in 2023 before the Eagles have the option to exercise a fifth-year option for the 2027 campaign.

Les Snead and the Rams being willing to include Verse in their offer meant other interested teams, like Philadelphia, would need to include a young star of similar stature. Carter or possibly Jordan Davis were the two options, though clearly Howie Roseman had no desire to move on from his 2023 (ninth overall) and 2022 (13th overall) first-round draft picks.

Time will tell whether that was the right decision or not, as once again, it was Los Angeles that threw all of its chips into the middle to acquire a superstar while the rest of the league watched from afar.
