Penn State freshman forward Gavin McKenna, widely regarded as the consensus No. 1 pick for the 2026 NHL Draft, has been charged with felony aggravated assault and three additional counts following an alleged incident in downtown State College, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, January 31.
According to court documents filed Wednesday in Magisterial District Court and first reported by Onward State, the 18-year-old McKenna faces a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault — defined as attempting to cause serious bodily injury or causing injury with extreme indifference to human life — along with misdemeanor simple assault and summary offenses for harassment and disorderly conduct. Conviction on the felony alone could result in up to 20 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine.
What’s The Context Of The McKenna Altercation?
According to reports, the altercation occurred late Saturday night, shortly after Penn State’s high-profile outdoor game at Beaver Stadium against Michigan State. Sources indicate the team, including friends and family, had gathered at a downtown bar (reportedly Doggie’s Pub) when the incident unfolded.
McKenna was apparently out with his mother.
Reports state McKenna allegedly assaulted an unidentified individual, leaving the victim with a broken jaw. Widespread social media accounts and alleged witness reports suggest the altercation escalated after the individual repeatedly insulted and harassed McKenna’s mother, including derogatory comments that persisted despite requests to stop. These claims portray McKenna as intervening to defend his family member, though they are unverified and have not been corroborated in court filings or police statements.

Penn State issued a brief statement: “We are aware that charges have been filed; however, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment.” The NHL, aware of the situation, declined to comment as McKenna is not yet in the league. A preliminary hearing date is pending, and the charges have not been tested in court.
McKenna has posted impressive numbers this season with 11 goals and 32 points in 24 games, despite adjustment challenges at the college level. It’s not clear if this incident will impact his draft stock at the upcoming NHL Entry Draft.
