Fresh off a dominant FIFA World Cup where he took home the Golden Ball as the best player in the tournament, Rodri is in the headlines for where he’ll be playing his club football moving forward.
The Manchester City midfielder’s current contract runs through June 2027, and while the Premier League powerhouse has offered him a massive extension, Rodri has his sights set on going back home to play for Real Madrid.
However, according to insider Fabrizio Romano, there is a roadblock in the way, and that is team president Florentino Perez.
“Rodri would love a return to Spain and dreams of Real Madrid, clear since months. At same time, Florentino Pérez has always blocked this deal or any negotiations for Rodri this summer. Man City new contract proposal, on the table since April,”
The 30-year-old Rodri tallied one goal and zero assists in 17 starts for Manchester City in 2025-26 after returning from a torn ACL suffered in September 2024.
Recent reports have suggested that Real Madrid may be reconsidering the possibility of bringing in Rodri, although it will ultimately come down to Perez, whose opinion remains unknown.
“Real Madrid are internally reconsidering Rodri’s situation. After his stellar World Cup performances, a portion of the club’s board is pressing to reach an agreement with the player.
Rodri himself is showing to be completely open to returning to Spain, which has always been his priority. It remains to be seen what Florentino Pérez’s stance is, as just a few weeks ago he was rejecting this possibility of a signing. They are weighing the options,”
Nobody truly knows why Perez is reluctant to sign Rodri in the first place, though his brilliant World Cup performance should at the very least have him reconsidering his decision, as the report suggests.
Madrid is looking to fill the void left by recently departed legend Luka Modric in the midfield, and Rodri could be the perfect solution to that.
