Entering the 2026-27 season on his fifth-year option, Christian Gonzalez appears poised to cash in on his next contract with the New England Patriots.
Owner Robert Kraft spoke with the media at training camp on Saturday and revealed that not only have the Patriots offered Gonzalez a massive new extension that would make him the highest-paid cornerback ever, but also the highest-paid player in franchise history regardless of position.
“We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player and as a person. You know, that’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL. Coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in Patriots franchise history. So we’re glad we drafted him and he’s developed here, and we hope he’ll be with us for a long time,”
The 24-year-old Gonzalez, as mentioned, is set to play out the final year of his rookie contract after the club picked up his fifth-year option in April. He was selected to the Pro Bowl last year after allowing just one touchdown while breaking up 10 passes in 14 games during the regular season.
Despite speculation that Gonzalez could hold out or hold in while seeking a new deal, the superstar cornerback was present and participating in full-team drills on Saturday, another sign that an extension could be nearing.
New England’s 2023 first-round pick (17th overall) has quickly emerged as one of the best shutdown corners in the game to start his career, recently landing in third on ESPN’s list of top 10 players at the position, as ranked by executives, coaches, and scouts.
Training camp can often be a nervous and tense time with expiring contracts looming, though in this case, it sounds very much like Gonzalez and the Patriots are well on their way to a long-term marriage.
