The Philadelphia 76ers have officially gone all-in. After signing LeBron James to a two-year contract, the Sixers now sit as the betting favorites to win the Eastern Conference and own the third-best odds to capture the 2027 NBA Championship, trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks.
According to the latest sportsbooks, Philadelphia’s title odds have surged to +900 after opening the offseason as longshots before adding both Jaylen Brown and James.
The question now shifts from whether Philadelphia can contend to whether it can finish the job.
The NBA’s Most Talented Starting Five?
Few teams in recent NBA history can match the star power Philadelphia now possesses.
A projected lineup of Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James and Joel Embiid gives the Sixers elite talent at every position. Brown brings All-NBA caliber defense and scoring, Maxey has blossomed into one of the league’s premier guards, while James remains one of basketball’s greatest playmakers despite entering his 24th NBA season.
For Embiid, this could be the best supporting cast he has ever had.
Rather than carrying the offense every possession, the former MVP can focus more on dominating inside while James orchestrates the offense. Brown provides another elite shot creator, while Maxey’s speed and shooting become even more dangerous playing alongside one of the greatest passers in NBA history.
On paper, Philadelphia has as much talent as any team in basketball.
Health Will Decide Their Championship Chances
As exciting as the roster looks, there are still legitimate concerns. The biggest question is whether the Sixers can stay healthy when it matters most.
Embiid’s postseason availability has been a recurring storyline throughout his career, while James will be 41 years old during the season. Philadelphia doesn’t need either player to dominate all 82 games, but they’ll need both healthy once the playoffs begin.
The Sixers will also need their supporting cast to deliver. Championship teams aren’t built on stars alone, and role players will have to consistently defend, knock down open shots and provide quality minutes throughout what could be a long playoff run.
Philadelphia Has Earned Favorite Status
The Eastern Conference won’t be easy. The defending champion New York Knicks remain among the league’s elite, while teams like the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers still have enough talent to challenge anyone in a seven-game series.
Still, it’s hard to argue against Philadelphia being the team to beat.
The addition of James completes one of the most aggressive offseasons in franchise history after already acquiring Brown earlier this summer. Sportsbooks have responded by making the Sixers the betting favorite in the East and the No. 3 championship favorite overall.
Whether that translates into a title remains to be seen, but one thing is clear.
The pressure is now squarely on Philadelphia. Anything short of an NBA Finals appearance will likely be viewed as a disappointment, and if LeBron James and Joel Embiid can stay healthy, the 76ers may finally have their best opportunity in decades to bring another championship to Philadelphia.
