There are goal scorers, and then there are players who seem to have a knack for showing up when a game is hanging in the balance. Montreal Canadiens fans are getting a pretty good look at the second kind in Cole Caufield.
Caufield scored the overtime winner in Thursday’s 5-4 victory over the Utah Mammoth. It was his 15th career overtime game-winner, and he reached that milestone in just 384 games. No player in NHL history has done it faster. Connor McDavid needed 559 games to reach the same number. That’s quite a bit of company to keep.
Caufield Is More Than a Pure Goal Scorer
It’s tempting to look at Caufield and focus on the goals. He’s an excellent shooter, and his quick release makes him dangerous whenever he gets a little room. But there’s something else developing here.
Overtime is a different kind of hockey. The open ice creates opportunities, but it also demands patience, awareness and the ability to recognize when the right moment arrives. One mistake can end the game. Caufield has shown that he can handle those moments.
Three-on-three overtime gives skilled players more room to operate. That deserves some consideration when looking at his record. But the opportunity is there for both teams. Somebody still has to finish the play. And Caufield keeps doing it.

The 50-Goal Conversation Is Getting Interesting
His overtime success is only part of the story. Through 16 games this season, Caufield has 11 goals and four assists, with 54 shots on net. That’s a pace that would put him on track for another 50-goal season if he can maintain it. That’s an exciting possibility for Montreal, particularly because he’s already shown he can produce at that level.
There’s also something enjoyable about watching a player develop a reputation like this. When the Canadiens reach overtime, fans know Caufield is one of the players who can make something happen. Opponents know it, too. Nobody scores every time, and there will be nights when the puck doesn’t cooperate. That’s hockey.
But Caufield is giving Montreal something beyond another productive goal scorer. He’s becoming a player fans can look toward when the game matters most. And that’s a pretty nice place for a young player to be.
