Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and now CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo has been in the news for all the wrong reasons this past week.
Eight days ago, Romo was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Milwaukee. Body cam footage of the arrest and subsequent testing has since come out and gone viral online, and on Friday, CBS Sports stepped into the matter.
It was announced that Romo will be on leave from his role until further notice, and ESPN insider Adam Schefter then noted on X (formerly Twitter) that fellow former NFL star JJ Watt would take over in his place for the time being.
“CBS Sports announced that analyst Tony Romo is on leave from his role “until further notice.”
For the time being, analyst JJ Watt will replace Tony Romo, and work alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson,”
The now 46-year-old Romo spent parts of 12 seasons with the Cowboys before retiring in 2017. He has four years remaining on the 10-year, $180 million contract extension he signed with CBS Sports back in March of 2020.
Romo burst onto the scene as CBS’ lead game analyst alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson, capturing the football world with his knack for often correctly predicting upcoming plays throughout the game. He’s remained in that role ever since, though this situation obviously puts his future very much up in the air.
To further complicate matters for Romo, the latest report to come out has stated that police found an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage in his car during last week’s arrest.
It’s certainly not looking too good right now for Romo, and with the 2026-27 NFL season right around the corner, CBS had to step in and make a decision sooner rather than later, as they did here.
