The dog days of the NHL offseason are in full swing, so every once in a while, an online rumor comes along to stir the pot.
Over the weekend, that came thanks to a tweet suggesting that the world’s best player, Connor McDavid, intends to sign with his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs at the end of his current contract, no matter what.
While that rumor didn’t come from a known credible source, it’s no surprise that it gained plenty of traction as a hot topic around the hockey world. As a result, popular Toronto media figure Sid Seixeiro recently dove into the idea, which he believes is absurd and has no chance of happening.
“There’s a thought being floated that Connor McDavid, who is now less than two years from unrestricted free agency, has already decided he wants to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs. I can’t even say it with a straight face. I don’t believe for one second Connor McDavid, having gone through the Canadian hockey market ringer, would up the ante with all due respect to Edmonton to a slightly crazier hockey market, which is Toronto, and take on not only the pressure for him to potentially win his first Cup if it doesn’t happen in Edmonton, but the Leafs’ first in like 60 years. I think it’s an absurd thought,”
The 29-year-old McDavid will be entering the first year of the two-year, $25 million contract extension he signed with the Oilers in October next season (2026-27).
Unless it’s Elliotte Friedman, it’s hard to trust any report or rumor nowadays, and especially so when coming from an anonymous Twitter rumor account. That being said, it has picked up enough steam to become a talking point, and when McDavid is involved, everybody’s ears perk up.
There’s no doubt that his future in Edmonton beyond this short-term extension is in question, but it all depends on how the Oilers fare this season and potentially next. Until then, everything is just speculation, because McDavid himself likely doesn’t even know where he’ll be playing two years from now.
