Jesús de Miguel’s Death Is a Heartbreaking Reminder of the Risks Athletes Accept

Sports give us some wonderful moments. We celebrate the skill, courage, determination, and physical commitment athletes bring to competition. We admire players who put themselves in difficult situations to help their teams win. But every so often, something happens that reminds us there’s another side to that commitment.

Spanish soccer player Jesús de Miguel, 30, died Tuesday after suffering cardiac arrest following an on-field collision during a second-division match. The Tenerife forward had been challenging for a ball when he collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono. He was taken to hospital, but sadly, he could not be saved.

It’s a terrible loss for his family, teammates, friends, and everyone connected with the club. It’s also a moment that asks the rest of us to think about the risks athletes accept every time they step onto a playing surface.

Competition carries risks we sometimes take for granted.

We watch sports because we enjoy the competition. We want players to go hard, challenge for the ball, finish checks, and make the difficult play. That’s part of what makes sports compelling. But there’s a fine line between competing physically and being reminded just how vulnerable athletes can be.

In soccer, players routinely challenge for possession at speed. In hockey, collisions along the boards and in open ice are part of the game. Football players tackle, basketball players battle for position, and athletes in countless other sports put their bodies under enormous physical demands. Most of the time, everyone gets up and continues playing. That’s what makes an incident like this so difficult to comprehend.

We shouldn’t need a tragedy to appreciate the responsibility athletes have toward one another. Competition requires physical commitment, but it also requires respect for the people on the other side.

The human side of sports matters more than the result.

There’s another reminder here for those of us who watch and write about sports. We can get so caught up in results, standings, individual performances, and the decisions that determine games that we sometimes forget what’s happening beneath it all.

These are people, not simply players in a lineup. They have families, friends, teammates, and lives beyond the sport. Clubs and athletes across soccer have responded with heartfelt condolences. The game itself becomes secondary when a player loses his life.

Life-threatening injuries from soccer collisions are extremely rare, as the Associated Press reported. That’s important context. We shouldn’t turn this tragedy into an argument that sports are inherently unsafe or that athletes should stop competing with the physical commitment that makes their games special. But rare doesn’t mean we shouldn’t reflect on what happened.

Jesús de Miguel

Sports remind us all just how fragile human life can be.

Jesús de Miguel went to work playing the sport he loved. His teammates expected to finish a match. Supporters expected to watch another game. Nobody expected the evening to end this way.

Sometimes sports give us reasons to celebrate. Sometimes they bring us face-to-face with just how fragile life can be. This is one of those moments when the result, the standings, and everything else can wait. Our thoughts should be with de Miguel’s family and everyone who knew him.
