According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, Brendan Gallagher has likely played his last game as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. Following a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes that eliminated the Canadiens from the NHL playoffs in the Eastern Conference Final, Gallagher stands as one of the players Montreal may try to move this summer in an effort to improve their roster and make another run.
Engels writes:
“To know that he’s probably played his last game in the only one he’s ever worn in this league — the one he’s bled for countless times through 990 games (regular season and post-season combined) — is sad, given his contribution to the team’s ascent to where it finds itself and where it’s going in the future.” Engles adds, “But that is the cruel reality of this business, which head coach Martin St. Louis has said on numerous occasions he takes no delight in.”

Gallagher was called upon one time in the series against Carolina, but his ice time was limited. Engles explained that even though the Canadiens might not see a future for him, other teams like what he brings.
“Sources have indicated there is interest in the player’s services elsewhere, as his contract — carrying a $6.5-million cap hit — is set to expire at the end of next season. A team like the Vancouver Canucks, who are rebuilding and need good veterans, would likely be a suitor.” The scribe then says that other teams might make a bet on Gallagher, trying to acquire a sweetener in the trade, only to flip him at next season’s deadline to a contender that sees his value.
There will be contenders that need the grit and depth he could provide over a playoff run.
Gallagher does have a no-move clause, but he’s unlikely to stand in the way of a trade if the Canadiens let him know that they don’t have a spot for him next season. He’s proud and wants a chance to play.
