Longtime New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Chad Green has officially retired from baseball, confirming the news in an interview with Randy Olson of AreaSports.net. Green, 35, did not pitch in 2026 and has been a free agent for more than a year.
Green spent three seasons with the Blue Jays (from 2023-25) and parts of seven seasons with the Yankees before that. The Toronto Blue Jays released Green on August 3, 2025, ending his playing career.
He said he made his retirement official in early April, noting it hasn’t been long since he stepped away. After being designated for assignment last year, he kept throwing and working out in case a worthwhile offer came along, but nothing materialized. For now, he’s focused on spending time with his three kids and said he’s unsure what comes next, including whether he’ll pursue coaching.
Asked if he has a plan for what’s next, Green responded:
“Well, I mean, nothing yet. I mean, I officially just called it quits in April, early April. I was still throwing and stuff once I got designated last year. I was still kind of working out and throwing and getting ready just in case an offer was worth it and something that I could leave and go do. But nothing really materialized… I really only called it quits in April. So it really hasn’t been that long since I’ve been officially checked out of it. So, you know, just spending time with the kids and we’ll see down the road. I’m not sure.”
Green was selected in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB Draft and spent the first seven years of his career with the Yankees. His best season in the Bronx came in 2017, when he went 5-0 with a 1.83 ERA across 40 games. He later pitched his final three seasons in Toronto, where he went 4-6 with a 3.21 ERA in 53 games in 2024.
The news comes as the Yankees are home for the offseason after being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS. Game 3 was a 4-3 loss at Yankee Stadium on October 7.
