Analyst: Dylan Larkin Should Be Embarrassed By Trade Request Botch

Dylan Larkin wants out of Detroit, and the TSN OverDrive panel says he and his camp have made it harder on themselves. In fact, they believe he should be embarrassed by the fact that he’s had to expand his trade list because no one on his original list stepped up to acquire him. That Larkin and his agent didn’t have a good read on the market is wild.

“I find it crazy, guys. I actually find it embarrassing,” said Jeff O’Neill. He argued that Larkin and his agent misread the market, pointing to the fact that the former Red Wings captain has had to expand his trade list to 10 teams. According to Helene St. James, Larkin has listed the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche.

The panelists agreed that a player seeking a trade should understand the market before being as picky as Larkin has been. They called it poor management and questioned why anyone would restrict their options if they didn’t have a good read on how much teams were willing to make reasonable trade offers.

At this point, it seems as likely that Larkin may have little choice but to stay. There seems to be no real ground being made on a trade, and St. James added that a source inside the Red Wings organization noted, “We would like him to stay but he wants to go to another team. Big credit to Larkin, for still playing for us. He is a good guy.”

Are the Wild In Or Out?

TSN’s Darren Dreger added, “The teams on the list are top teams; those teams just aren’t willing to tear apart their lineup or give what the Red Wings need.” The list started with Minnesota, Vegas and Florida. Only the Wild are said to be interested, but they have other problems to solve, including a contract extension with Quinn Hughes.

Michael Russo, who reports for the Wild, noted that he believes something might be close. “The Wild, I believe, according to sources, had another call with Detroit the other day, and were trying to convince them that…a futures deal…you could use these futures…to get other things.” However, another insider, Frank Seravalli, notes, “I think in trade talks, the Red Wings have balked a little bit about the quality of Danila Yurov being one of the centerpieces.”

Larkin has added other teams, and how his list is up to a third of the league. Interestingly, he’s still being particular, ruling out any Canadian clubs, including Montreal, the team rumored to be ready to make the best offer. The Canadiens may also be as well set up financially as any team. At some point, they may get frustrated by his limits and move on.

Larkin is seeking a change after Detroit missed the playoffs 10 straight seasons. That’s understandable. What might not be is why he’s being so specific with his trade list if he a) just wants out of Detroit and b) wants to win. Now that he’s made a mess of this whole thing, it’s hard to know if he’s ever going to land where he’d really like to.
