Auston Matthews reached game No. 700 on Tuesday night, and he marked the occasion the way you might expect. He scored, helped the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-2, and added another little piece to an already remarkable NHL career.
There was a lot to like about this one. Matthews scored his 436th career goal, added an assist, and recorded his 68th career game-winning goal. The win also gave Toronto its first set of back-to-back victories this season. Not a bad way to celebrate a milestone game.
Matthews’ Numbers Tell an Even Bigger Story
Matthews tied Pavel Bure for sixth in NHL history in goals scored through a player’s 700th career game. Only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Brett Hull, and Jari Kurri were ahead of them on that list. That’s some company to keep. We’re talking about some of the greatest goal scorers the game has ever seen, and Matthews is right there.
He also became just the 17th player in Maple Leafs history to play 700 games with the franchise. That’s worth remembering, too. Toronto has a long history, and reaching that mark with one team says something about both his production and his place in the organization.
Matthews has points in back-to-back games, with two goals and three assists over that stretch. His three power-play goals also put him tied with Kirill Marchenko for the team lead. He’s still finding ways to contribute, even as attention around the team shifts from one young player to the next big story.
Matthews’ Milestone Night Had Room for Teammates, Too
And speaking of young players, Easton Cowan had quite a night himself, recording three points in a period. Matthews has done that twice in his career, so he knows a thing or two about making an impression early.
One other moment caught my attention. Marshall Rifai scored his first NHL goal, and commentator Craig Simpson wondered whether the puck might have gone in off Matthews. No one will know for sure if Matthews could have claimed the goal but instead let Rifai have the moment. If so, that would be classy leadership. A first NHL goal is something a player remembers for the rest of his life.

At 700 Games, Matthews Is Among the NHL’s Scoring Elite
At 700 games, Matthews doesn’t need to prove much about his scoring ability. He’s already put himself among the game’s elite. The more interesting question now is how much more he can accomplish, and how many more of these nights he can give Toronto.
For the Maple Leafs, having Matthews around for the journey is still a pretty good place to start.
