According to NBA insider Shams Charania, LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option, Klutch Sports Group and Klutch CEO and Game Over show host Rich Paul tells ESPN.
“I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and deicide if I still love.” He added, “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time. Thank you LA. Miami, I’ll forever love you, and Northeast Ohio will always be home!”
The news that he’s going to Philadelphia also means LeBron is ending his eight-year run with the Lakers and making Philly the fourth team of his career. The two-year, $8 million deal includes a player option.
James, 41, chose the Sixers over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and several other suitors. He was reportedly swayed by the recruiting efforts of Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and new addition Jaylen Brown. He joins a Sixers team that already stunned the league by trading for Brown on July 2. James is chasing a fifth championship and hoping to end Philadelphia’s 43-year title drought.
Philadelphia just went from a middling Eastern Conference team to arguably the East’s scariest roster on paper.
The Case for a Title Contender
The core features Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, James, and Embiid — a lineup with elite scoring, playmaking, and perimeter shooting that would be unstoppable at full strength. James himself is still productive, having averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds in 33.2 minutes across 60 games last season. His biggest value-add isn’t scoring load — it’s his passing and basketball IQ, which slot in seamlessly next to Philadelphia’s existing stars.
That said, the success of this roster comes back to the same thing. How will they do if Embiid isn’t healthy? Is the roster deep enough to be competitive if Embiid remains injury-prone? Embiid played more than three games in last year’s second-round loss to the Knicks, topped 20 points just once, and looked visibly exhausted. There’s also a fit question independent of health — some analysts have wondered whether James, who wants a bigger on-ball role than he had in his final Lakers years, can find that role squeezed between Maxey, Brown, and Embiid.
On paper, this is now a top-tier Eastern Conference roster with real championship equity — but it’s a “if healthy” team.
