As per @Feinsand, and @AJCassavell, right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres have come to terms on a six-year agreement that will $108 million, sources tell ESPN. The deal starts this season and runs through 2028 when Darvish will be 42. Darvish was set to be a free agent after this season. Instead, he’s signing the third six-year deal of his career — first with Texas, then Chicago — and should finish his career in San Diego. The deal is expected to become official later today.
Darvish is coming off one of his best seasons in the big leagues. At 35 years old, his most recent campaign saw him pile up 194 2/3 innings with an ERA of 3.10. He had strikeout and walk rates (25.6% and 4.8%) better than the league average and he had an average fastball speed of 95 mph. he started Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series and NL Championship Series.
MLB.com writes, “The contract is a bit of a gamble for the Padres, who are committing a significant sum to a starter in his late 30s. But they’re comfortable doing so with a pitcher like Darvish, who has flourished late in his career and is coming off one of the best seasons of his career.”
He was already under contract for $18 million in 2023. This deal will add another five years and $90 million to his contract.
