The Toronto Blue Jays and star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have agreed to a staggering 14-year, $500 million contract extension, pending a physical, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The deal is one of the largest in Major League Baseball history and keeps Guerrero in Toronto through his prime years.

At 26, Guerrero is already a four-time All-Star with 160 home runs and 915 hits to his name. The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, he has become the face of the franchise and a cornerstone of the team’s long-term plans.
Notably, the deal includes no deferred money, making it the third-richest contract in present-day value in MLB, trailing only Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal and Juan Soto’s record-setting $765 million contract.
Toronto has been under pressure to retain its homegrown stars, with shortstop Bo Bichette set to hit free agency after the 2025 season. Bichette may still test the market, but Guerrero’s imminent extension is a major weight off the organization’s shoulders. Despite the huge amount of money being given out in this deal, this will be seen as a win for the Blue Jays’ front office. They struck out on other big names, including Ohtani and Soto.
Jays Are Putting Together a Solid Core
This offseason, the Jays also added Anthony Santander on a five-year, $92.5 million deal, traded for Platinum Glove second baseman Andres Gimenez, and signed Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million contract. This team is trying to win.

As per ESPN:
“Toronto’s long-term commitments will allow for significant financial flexibility. In addition to Bichette and Scherzer, right-hander Chris Bassitt and relievers Chad Green and Erik Swanson are free agents after this season. After 2026, the nine-figure deals of outfielder George Springer and right-hander Kevin Gausman also come off the books.”
With Guerrero now locked in long-term, the Blue Jays are positioning themselves to contend for years to come.
