Less than one month after acquiring four-time All-Star Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks, the Washington Wizards have made another massive move.
This time, they’ve acquired a 10-time NBA All-Star in Anthony Davis from the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster deal involving seven other players and five future draft picks.
The full details see Davis, Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell, and Dante Exum heading to Washington in exchange for a package of Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III, two first-round picks, and three second-round picks going the other way.
ESPN insider Shams Charania broke news of the trade on Wednesday afternoon on X (formerly Twitter).
Davis will join the fourth team of his 15-year NBA career, putting an end to his brief pit stop in Dallas, where he played just 29 games after the shocking move that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Injuries have once again hampered the 32-year-old, though when available, he remains effective, averaging 20.4 PPG, 11.1 RPG, 2.8 APG, and 1.7 BPG across 20 appearances in 2025–26 thus far.
He’s in year one of the three-year, $186 million extension he originally signed with the Lakers back in 2023, which includes a player option after the 2026–27 campaign.
Anthony Davis Trade a Gamble for the Wizards
There’s no dancing around the fact that trading for Davis comes with plenty of risk, given his lengthy injury history and overall inability to stay on the floor. That said, the Young trade signaled a shift in direction for the Wizards, and adding Davis into the fold only further enhances that.

Washington will head into 2026-27 with a new look core of veteran stars in Davis and Young mixed with promising young players in Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Tre Johnson, and Kyshawn George.
Pair that with a potential top-five pick in the upcoming draft, which is projected to be very strong, and the Wizards could emerge as a serious threat in the Eastern Conference beyond this season. Whether or not this mishmash of players will gel remains to be seen. However, it’s been a long time since there’s been any hope in Washington, so at the very least, there’s finally something to be excited about when it comes to basketball in the nation’s capital.
