What’s Really Going on with Elias Pettersson?

If you’re a Vancouver Canucks fan, this has been an interesting (almost shocking) season. Among the team’s problems is Elias Pettersson’s struggle to find his form. Fans are rightfully wondering: What happened to the dynamic playmaker who lit up the ice during the 102-point season? It’s clear that something is off, and his play hasn’t been the same since.

Despite flashes of brilliance here and there (including last night against the Calgary Flames), Pettersson just hasn’t been able to regain the consistency and confidence that made him a star. So, what’s going on with Petey?

Pettersson Is a Star Who’s Not the Same Player

Pettersson was (and still should be) the heartbeat of the Canucks. He’s had breakout seasons, including one where he put up an impressive 102 points. His speed, vision, and playmaking skills made him a top-tier player in the league.

But something seems to have changed since the 2023-2024 season. Pettersson has struggled with his game in ways that are hard to ignore. The elite skills we once saw regularly are no longer in evidence. His smooth skating, sharp shooting, and ability to create plays have often been absent. So, what’s causing this drastic drop in play?

Possible Reasons: Physical or Mental Fatigue?

A big part of the conversation has revolved around Pettersson’s fitness level, particularly in the offseason. Much like the rest of the league, players are scrutinized when they come into training camp looking unprepared. After a less-than-ideal end to last season and the playoffs, Pettersson was criticized for not being in top shape during the 2024 training camp.

Was he simply unmotivated? Or was there something more going on? Was there an issue with his physical health that he didn’t share with the public? Pettersson’s struggles may stem from a more profound, unresolved issue—one that’s physical and mental.

Brain and Body Disconnect: The Root of the Struggles?

It’s possible that brain fatigue and a physical disconnect are major factors in Pettersson’s struggles. He has shown signs of what appears to be brain-body disconnection—a common issue for athletes who might be dealing with lingering physical injuries or mental issues that affect their game.

If fans look back at his level of play during the 2023-2024 season, we see a player who can’t shake off mental cobwebs. Until that happens, how can he return to his former level of play? Whether it’s a result of long-term wear and tear from past injuries or some unaddressed underlying issue—be it the lingering effects of COVID, concussions, or autoimmune challenges—it’s clear that Pettersson hasn’t fully recovered.

What’s Next for Pettersson and the Canucks?

After nearly a year of struggling to regain his previous form, what’s next? This leaves fans wondering if Pettersson will ever return to the player we once saw during his 102-point season. The fact is that his skills are not what they used to be. It’s not just about one or two bad games; it’s been almost an entire season of inconsistent performance.

Again, those have been mixed with some brilliance, but this has been inconsistent. It’s also not been enough to put him back on top of his game. His lack of answers and transparency around his condition only fuels more questions. Is he dealing with injuries that the public doesn’t know about? Are the team doctors aware of something they haven’t disclosed? Pettersson’s situation is becoming more perplexing with each passing game.

The Bottom Line for the Canucks Pettersson

For now, Pettersson remains a mystery. No one knows whether it’s a physical or mental block—or something entirely different. Nor can anyone hazard a logical guess.

But one thing is clear: something is amiss. Until it’s addressed, Pettersson will probably continue to struggle to get back to the level we know he’s capable of.
