The Golden State Warriors are now the No. 6 seed in the NBA’s Western Conference. They were ranked 12th just two weeks ago. Pretty soon they’ll be adding Finals MVP (Andre Iguodala), All-Star Starter (Andrew Wiggins), and Top 5 Player Ever (Steph Curry) which will give them an active roster that resembles something close to the team that won four championships over the last eight seasons. And, it’s possible the team may look to do more to help themselves in the meantime.
With Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green on the roster the team is capable of going on a run. But, a deal or two ahead of the February 9 trade deadline wouldn’t hurt. A team in win-now mode likely has a general manager in Bob Myers who will be looking around the league for opportunities to improve the club.
Jack Simone from Heavy.com proposed a blockbuster trade that would see the Warriors acquire big men P.J. Washington and Mason Plumlee from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for 2020 second-overall pick James Wiseman, Moses Moody plus a lottery protected 2026 first-round pick. He writes:
“Adding Plumlee and Washington would give their bench two solid upgrades. Plumlee has been putting together a solid season for Charlotte and would be an immediate upgrade over Wiseman. As for Washington, he’s putting up career-high marks and would pair alongside Jordan Poole to form a lethal one-two punch off the bench.
By adding two legitimate bench pieces, and ones that can be trusted to produce on a nightly basis, Golden State could catapult themselves back into the championship race.”
It will be intriguing to see what the Warriors do as they climb the standings but look to take advantage of an opportunity as other teams fall out of contention.
