Wednesday, September 23, 2026, was not a day Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans are going to look back on very fondly.

A doubleheader in Baltimore against the Orioles began with a 4-2 loss that officially eliminated the Blue Jays from playoff contention. As that was going on, comments from Guerrero Jr. in a recent interview went viral for all the wrong reasons, and he didn’t do much to quiet the noise postgame. To finish it all off, Toronto fell again, 4-2, in the nightcap, albeit in a meaningless game at that point.

While what Guerrero Jr. said in the aforementioned interview seemed to suggest he’s not too worried about how people view his contract, he clarified afterward that that’s certainly not the case. In fact, he admitted that he thinks about it after every single at-bat in which he doesn’t produce.

Guerrero Jr. said through interpreter Hector Lebron:

“I have to be honest with you, of course.. every at bat that I fail, I think about my contract because I know people go to the field or they pay to go to see me be successful.. to do something good every year

The 27-year-old Guerrero Jr., of course, signed a massive 14-year, $500 million contract extension with the Blue Jays in April 2025. He has had a very tough 2026 season, hitting .263 with just nine home runs and 56 RBI through 142 games played so far.

It’s all gotten messy rather quickly for Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays, and the best thing for everyone is for the superstar first baseman to lay low for a little bit and let the noise settle down.

Pressure was already going to be on Guerrero Jr. to bounce back in a major way heading into 2027, and that’s only been amplified by his recent comments.
