Realistic or not, the number one talking point around the NBA after LeBron James made his decision to go to Philadelphia is the potential that Stephen Curry could eventually leave Golden State.
While nothing appears imminent, the longtime face of the Warriors is in a tricky situation as he looks to make the most of the final years of his legendary career. The most likely scenario remains that Curry plays things out in Golden State. However, if he or the organization do ever decide it’s best to part ways, insider John Karalis believes the Boston Celtics will be there waiting and, in fact, have already made the call to show their interest either way.
“Neither story suggests Curry wants out of Golden State or that there’s any interest in the team to move him. But what those reports show is the potential for a crack in the foundation of the Curry-era Warriors. For the first time, we’re hearing that Curry might not be thrilled with the team’s direction, and that ownership is looking past the final few years of his career.
I’m not entirely confident in Curry being traded this season. It would be a bit of a shocking development if he did. There’s no doubt Brad Stevens has already been on the phone with the Warriors brass to pitch a deal if they want one. I think the current CBA demands cold-hearted decision making, and trading Curry would be as cold as it gets. It would also be smart to get some assets for him while they can. Boston has some, and a path to making a decent deal for both sides,”
The 38-year-old Curry is about to enter the final year of the one-year, $62.59 million contract extension he signed with the Warriors in 2024. He averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game in just 43 games played last season.
Curry joining Tatum on the Celtics would be fascinating and make up for the move to trade Jaylen Brown to the 76ers for an underwhelming return, to say the least. Karalis spitballed a package of Paul George, Sam Hauser, and the two first-round picks Boston acquired from Philadelphia as an offer Brad Stevens could pitch to Mike Dunleavy Jr.
A trade will almost certainly not happen this offseason, though if Golden State gets off to a slow start to the 2026-27 season, these rumors will only get louder and potentially become real.
