The Buffalo Bills Are Winning, and Josh Allen Isn’t Doing It Alone

There’s something to be said for a team that keeps finding ways to win when the game gets tight. It’s one thing to beat somebody by three touchdowns. It’s another to reach the final minutes with the outcome uncertain and still find a way to get the job done.

That’s where the Buffalo Bills find themselves. At 5-1, they’ve already played several close games, and Josh Allen has been a big reason they’ve come through most of them. He’s the sort of quarterback who can turn a broken play into something special. But I wonder if the more interesting story is what the Bills are learning about the people around him.

Even a Superstar Still Needs Help

Allen can do things other quarterbacks can’t. That’s part of what makes watching him so much fun. But there’s a danger in building a team’s whole identity around the belief that its star will always find an answer. At some point, somebody else has to make a play.

James Cook did his part against Las Vegas, contributing on the ground and through the air. Keon Coleman has also begun to look more comfortable in a larger role. Those contributions matter because they give Allen somewhere else to turn when the defence takes away his first option.

It’s a useful reminder that supporting players don’t have to be superstars themselves. They have to be ready when their number is called. A team becomes harder to defend when opponents can’t concentrate all their attention on one player.

Close Wins Can Teach a Team Something

The other interesting part of Buffalo’s start is its defence. It hasn’t been perfect, and close games can make every weakness look bigger than it is. But the defence made enough important stops against the Raiders to help the offence finish the job.

That doesn’t mean every narrow victory proves a team is destined for a deep playoff run. Sometimes a bounce goes your way, and sometimes it doesn’t. Buffalo also knows how quickly a close game can become a loss.

Still, there’s value in learning how to handle those moments. Players discover whom they can trust, coaches learn which combinations work, and younger contributors get experience that can’t easily be recreated in practice.

The Bills Still Have to Keep Playing Well

The Bills have plenty left to prove. Their defence will need to keep improving, and Allen can’t be expected to rescue them every Sunday. But that may be the encouraging part. Buffalo is winning close games while finding out who else can help. If more players become dependable when the pressure rises, the Bills won’t have to ask Allen to be extraordinary every time.

Even a great quarterback needs a team around him. The best sign for Buffalo may be that more of those teammates are beginning to show up.
