Suns Land Kevin Durant From Nets in Blockbuster Trade

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Phoenix Suns are working on finalizing a trade that would see them acquire Kevin Durant from the Brooklyn Nets. A blockbuster deal, it was rumored Durant was interested in joining the Suns when he first requested a trade from the Nets this past summer. Suns new owner wanted to finish what got started and Mat Ishbia worked hard to get a deal done Wednesday night.

The Nets are getting Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, Jae Crowder, PHX 2023 1st Round Pick, PHX 2025 1st Round Pick, PHX 2027 1st Round Pick, PHX 2028 1st Round Pick (Swap, More Favorable to BKN), PHX 2029 1st Round Pick. Wojnarowski adds, “Nets gets unprotected picks in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029, source tells ESPN.”

Earlier in the week the Nets moved Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and picks. This came after Irving stopped negotiating an extension with the team who wanted to add stipulations to his new deal. Once Irving was moved, it felt highly possible that Durant could be next. Throughout the day on Wednesday, it was reported the Nets showed no interest in moving the superstar. Clearly, things changed as the evening wound down and it’s likely because Durant made it clear he wanted out with the team falling apart.

Needless to say, the Nets’ superteam experiment that featured Irving, Durant, and James Harden failed miserably. All are now gone and the team never advanced past the Eastern Conference semifinals. Injuries and drama between the stars and the coaching staff created a disaster that was bound to end poorly. The Nets will now look at starting over and they won’t be a contender this season. They do now have some good pieces including the key piece coming back in the trade, Mikal Bridges.

The Suns will now have a superteam of their own with Durant now joining Devin Booker and Chris Paul. They’ll have a chance to really make a run at the title, especially with Paul winding down his NBA career and the window to win growing smaller. Wojnarowski notes that if the Suns don’t do anything else ahead of Thursday’s deadline, they might pick up some veterans via buyouts.
