Simon Benoit’s journey with the Toronto Maple Leafs has been nothing short of remarkable. After joining the team from the Anaheim Ducks, expectations were modest. Yet, Benoit has carved out a significant role for himself, showcasing resilience and determination.
Benoit Overcame Challenges to Land Maple Leafs Contract
Benoit’s path to the NHL wasn’t straightforward. Undrafted and facing early setbacks, he struggled with his on-ice performance. Undrafted, he was signed by the Ducks in 2019. Benoit logged heavy minutes during the 2022–23 season with the Anaheim Ducks, appearing in 78 games, registering three goals and adding seven assists for 10 points, along with 60 penalty minutes.
His plus-minus rating of -29 reflected the challenging circumstances—Anaheim was one of the NHL’s weakest teams, often overwhelmed defensively and struggling to control play. Despite the poor stat line, Benoit was consistently deployed in high-pressure situations against top opponents.
Those minutes were far from wasted. The experience he gained, particularly in a top-four role on a poor team, helped him develop critical defensive habits under duress. Benoit had to learn, from killing penalties to starting shifts in the defensive zone, on the fly. That trial by fire gave him valuable reps and has made him a more seasoned, responsible blueliner today.
When he came to the Maple Leafs, he had to earn his ice time and job. He did so with his relentless work ethic. He played well enough to earn a continuing contract. Although he wasn’t promised anything this season, he continued to persist. He credits the Maple Leafs’ coaching staff’s support and his own perseverance for his success.
“It was a long process this season,” Benoit reflected. “After Christmas, I think I managed to manage everything happening at home (with a new baby and a lack of sleep). It’s the best thing that could happen for me.”
Benoit’s Solid Playoff Performance Has Drawn Praise
Benoit’s efforts culminated in a pivotal moment during Game 3 of the first-round series against the Senators. With the game tied and overtime looming, Benoit seized the opportunity, scoring the game-winning goal at 1:19 of the overtime session. His shot, taken off an offensive zone draw, found its mark through traffic, propelling the Maple Leafs to a 3–2 victory and a commanding 3–0 series lead.
In an interview with the Hockey Night in Canada panel, Benoit shared his emotions following the goal. “I just lifted both arms and didn’t move,” he said. “I saw all those guys coming towards me. Good feeling.” His humility and gratitude were evident as he acknowledged the support of his teammates and coaching staff. “I’m just enjoying myself here,” Benoit added, highlighting the camaraderie and positive environment within the team.

Benoit’s Gratitude and Growth
Reflecting on his development, Benoit credited key figures who believed in his potential. Coaches like Dallas Eakins (with the Ducks) played instrumental roles during his development, encouraging him to arrive early for practice and fostering a mindset focused on growth and readiness. Benoit also appreciates the support from Maple Leafs management, which allowed him to navigate personal challenges while maintaining his professional growth.
Benoit’s story is a testament to hard work, support, and the unwavering belief in one’s abilities. As the Maple Leafs continue their playoff journey, Benoit’s contributions remind them of the unexpected heroes who can make all the difference.
