In a move that is being praised as an incredible display of asset management by Montreal Canadiens’ GM Kent Hughes, the team announced on Friday that forward Sean Monahan has been traded to the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets secured Monahan in exchange for their first-round pick in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2027. Essentially, the Canadiens netted two first-round picks by trading for and then trading away a center many believe was too washed up or injury-prone to be impactful.
Monahan, acquired from the Calgary Flames in August 2022, showcased his still-existent skills with the Canadiens, amassing 52 points (19 goals, 33 assists) in 74 games. But, the decision to trade Monahan was motivated by his currently strong season and a heightened interest by other teams ahead of the trade deadline. The Canadiens, recognizing the value they could obtain, made the move in a market that wasn’t full of quality centers, and a day after arguably the best one in Elias Lindholm came off the board in a trade to the Vancouver Canucks.
The Jets Targeted and Paid For the Player They Wanted in Monahan
For the Winnipeg Jets, the acquisition of Monahan brings a reliable and versatile player to their lineup. Coach Rick Bowness envisions Monahan starting on a line with Cole Perfetti and Nikolaj Ehlers, enhancing the Jets’ offensive capabilities. Frank Seravalli points out Monahan’s proficiency in completing passes, attacking the net with high-percentage shots, and excelling in faceoffs, both at even strength and on the penalty kill.
Despite some speculation among Canadiens fans about the potential for a more lucrative deal, the trade positions Montreal strategically, maximizing returns on Monahan’s value. The Canadiens sold at the right time and now, one of the top centers available at this season’s trade deadline is no longer an option for teams needing an upgrade.
