The Pittsburgh Steelers are trading for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Going back to Chicago is a 2025 6th-round pick that has conditions to potentially become a 4th. This trade was a long time coming for the Bears, as it has been expected for some time that Fields would be traded, as the team is expected to use the first overall pick on Caleb Williams. Many thought the trade would come sooner, as plenty of quarterbacks less rumored to be moved, already have new teams this offseason. But for those waiting on this move, it finally happened.
Chicago Bears
Chicago drafted Fields 11th overall in the 2021 draft, and while he’s shown flashes, he just wasn’t enough. During his three-year career Fields totalled 6674 passing yards and 17 touchdowns. Fields never finished a season with a record better than 7-10. This was seen as a big problem, as despite flashing his potential, the team couldn’t put everything together.
The Bears were gifted the first-overall pick in the upcoming draft via the Carolina Panthers, and with Fields not having definitively proven himself to be a franchise quarterback, they’re taking the out and moving on with former Heisman winner Caleb Williams.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh hasn’t had a steady quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger, and this offseason hasn’t changed that. Mason Rudolph signed with the Tennessee Titans, Mitch Trubisky signed with the Buffalo Bills and former first-rounder Kenny Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. To move forward, the Steelers brought in veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, and now add Justin Fields to the mix.
Despite adding Fields, Pittsburgh will not be allowing him to compete for the starting job. He will back up Russell Wilson. The value of Fields has been overestimated by fans, and perhaps the Bears staff, as he’s traded away to become a backup.
This highly anticipated trade ends the discussion that has been had throughout the offseason. This was the move everyone was waiting for. Fans can now look for what’s next after the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Justin Fields.
