Philadelphia 76ers Not Targeting Paul George in Free Agency

The Philadelphia 76ers have been connected to Paul George for some time now. However, Shams Charania has reported that the 76ers interest in George has “significantly waned”. This is surprising as George is a star player and would be a great fit for the 76ers.

This past season George averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. He’s been a member of the Los Angeles Clippers since the 2019-2020 season but may leave this offseason.   George has a player option for the upcoming season but is expected to opt-out to seek more term. The Clippers are yet to extend him, despite having plenty of opportunity, and already extending star Kawhi Leonard. It appears George will be leaving this offseason.

Only a select few teams would be able to afford George in this offseason. The 76ers have been the main team connected to him, but if they go elsewhere, George could be left with a lackluster market.

76ers Perspective

The 76ers have been disappointed in the playoffs through the Joel Embiid era. The team has been searching for star teammates to play alongside him but continues to fail. From Ben Simmons, to James Harden, to Jimmy Butler, and more. They haven’t found the right fit. Tyrese Maxey is a rising star in the league, but the 76ers could use an additional piece.

The 76ers have loads of cap space and Paul George would be the perfect fit. He could play the wing, provide an elite scoring threat, and be a plus defender. He can play on and off the ball. The 76ers interest is waning though, and they could potentially look elsewhere. They have enough cap space and draft picks to land a superstar, so look for the team to make a big trade.

The 76ers will seek to upgrade their roster this offseason, adding a third star to play with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. While the expectation was to add Paul George, it now appears that won’t happen as the Philadelphia 76ers interest has significantly waned.
