After several days of wondering when it would be made official, the San Diego Padres have officially signed Korean relief pitcher Woo-Suk Go to a two-year contract worth $4.5 million. The 25-year-old right-hander bolsters the Padres’ bullpen as they look to make a push for a much stronger season than they had last season where they finished third in the NL West with an 82-80-0 record.
Who Is Woo-Suk Go?
The 25-year-old right-hander stands at 5-foot-11 with a fastball that has been tracked in the mid-90s and has been tracked as high as 98 miles per hour. He has multiple breaking pitches in his arsenal as well and his control has been deemed solid, which is what many teams hope for in a reliever.
In seven seasons pitching with the LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization, Go has posted a 3.18 earned run average with 139 saves. He has also added 401 strikeouts in just over 368 innings of play. He is the brother-in-law of center fielder Jung Hoo Lee who the Padres reportedly pursued, but he opted to sign a massive six-year, $113 million deal with the San Francisco Giants instead.
Hopefully, this signing gives the Padres some strength in their bullpen with some flexibility on who they can put in to close out close games. Go has been strong as a closer in the KBO, and the Padres are hoping he can transfer that skill to the MLB.
