In an emotional moment during the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid secured bronze in the men’s 20km individual event but immediately shifted focus from his achievement to a live post-race confession interview with broadcaster NRK.
The 28-year-old, a seasoned competitor with a 2022 Olympic relay gold and multiple world championships, crossed the finish line 48.3 seconds behind gold medalist teammate Johan-Olav Botn. Yet, rather than celebrating, Lægreid broke down as he admitted to cheating on the love of his life, in what seemed like a plea to get her back.
Lægreid confessed while fighting back tears, “Six months ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful, sweetest person.” He continued, “And three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her.”
He said that he told his then-girlfriend a week earlier. “I told her a week ago, and then it ended, of course,” he added. “It has been the worst week of my life.”

Likely distracted by his personal struggles, Lægreid said he was “taking the consequences” and hoped his public admission—described by some reports as “social suicide”—might demonstrate his love and remorse. “I regret it with all my heart,” he stated. “I only have eyes for her.”
He later addressed his emotional moment in a follow-up press conference, explaining his decision to speak openly might demonstrate his remorse. He did seem to regret that using the platform to talk about his personal problems could be seen as selfish and potentially overshadow teammate Botn’s Olympic gold medal debut.
The confession quickly went viral.
