North Carolina Starts March Madness with Easy Win Over Wagner

The North Carolina Tar Heels got the final one seed when the March Madness bracket was announced. There was some discussion of how other teams could have deserved that spot, but today the Tar Heels proved their worth. They defeated the Wagner Seahawks 90-62 in an easy victory.

It was a two-man show for the Tar Heels. Senior forward Armando Bacot had a 20 point-15 rebound double-double. Senior guard and first-team All-American RJ Davis led the team with 22 points. While several other players contributed for the Tar Heels, these two are the heart of the team. Both were members of the 2022 national championship runner-up team and hope to finally win in their final year.

Wagner Injury Situation

While 16-seed Wagner was never likely to beat one-seed North Carolina, their injury situation didn’t help. The team only had seven healthy scholarship players on their roster entering the tournament. For any team, this creates chaos, as players become fatigued quickly. While they weren’t able to go far in the tournament, they were able to beat the Howard Bison in their first four games. They also win their Northeast Conference tournament. Considering their injury situation, they should be commended.

What’s Next for North Carolina?

The Tar Heels move forward in the tournament and will face the Michigan State Spartans in the Round of 32. Tom Izzo and the Spartans looked strong in their victory against Mississippi State. The veteran team should not be taken lightly. Both teams have experience and talent. North Carolina is a better team, but Michigan State is playing well.

RJ Davis North Carolina

This is not the matchup that the Tar Heels would have chosen. If they manage to get past the Spartans, other tough matchups may await them. There is potential for a heated game in the regional championship if both North Carolina and Arizona make it that far. Plenty of basketball has to be played before this, however, but North Carolina looked strong in their victory against Wagner.
