Nick Dunlap Becomes First Amateur PGA Tour Winner Since 1991

Alabama sophomore Nick Dunlap made history at The American Express on Sunday, becoming the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1991. The 2024 American Express leaderboard showcased Dunlap’s remarkable performance, as he secured victory at PGA West in La Quinta, California. Finishing at an impressive 29 under, he won by one stroke over Christiaan Bezuidenhout. With the win, Dunlap etched his name into the record books.

Dunlap, the third-ranked amateur globally, joined an elite group as only the third non-professional to win on the PGA Tour in the last six decades. He is the eighth amateur ever to achieve this feat and the youngest since 1910. He is 2nd youngest winner in the last 90 years (Jordan Spieth).

“I’m so happy to be standing here,” he said after the victory.

Reflecting on his historic win, Dunlap said, “I felt like the script today was already written. I was just going to give it everything I had, and whether I go shoot 75 or 65 or 70, I was just going to give it everything I had.” The emotions were overwhelming for Dunlap, who expressed how cool it was to experience this as an amateur, particularly considering the unlikely scenario he envisioned just days before.

Dunlap Never Waivered And Looked Like a Pro

Entering the final round in Palm Springs with a three-stroke lead over Sam Burns, Dunlap tied the PGA Tour amateur scoring record with a third-round 60. The final threesome exchanged pars before reaching the par-5 5th, where Dunlap, forced to lay up after a wayward drive, displayed remarkable skill by sticking his third shot within tap-in distance. Burns responded with a birdie of his own, but Dunlap’s consistent and outstanding play secured his place in history.
