The trade hasn’t been officially announced by either team, or the NHL, but multiple insiders are reporting that Timo Meier has been traded by the San Jose Sharks to the New Jersey Devils. The deal is pending the official trade call, according to @PierreVLeBrun.
LeBrun writes, “Still pending the official trade call, but hearing that the New Jersey Devils have acquired Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks.” He adds, “There is no Meier contract extension as part of this. The Devils became comfortable doing the trade without having him signed to an extension as part of it.” Chris Johnston reports the Sharks are retaining 50% of Timo Meier’s salary in this trade.
Emily Kaplan of ESPN reports, “Devils plan to use Meier as a “rental” and then explore the possibility of a long-term deal later.” She adds, according to sources, the Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights were the finalists in trade talks as well, but those teams were not given permission to speak with Meier’s agent, Claude Lemieux.
It is not clear what the return for the forward will be, but rumors that a first-round pick, a top prospect and a roster player were asked for in return. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports, “Sounds like Scott Harrington is going along with Timo Meier as part of the deal.”
Meier was arguably the top forward available at this season’s NHL Trade Deadline. As per @JFresh, “He is top scoring winger, an elite driver of offensive possession and scoring chances with excellent hands and instincts in tight. A big player who doesn’t shy away from physicality either.” He has 31 goals and 52 points this season and will be a restricted free agent this offseason, with a $10 million qualifying offer this summer. He was held out of San Jose’s practice by coach David Quinn on Feb. 19 because of an upper-body injury and has not played since. It was believed Meier is fine and that the organization’s choice to keep holding him out was due to trade-related reasons.
