Leon Draisaitl hit 100 points on Tuesday night as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Ottawa Senators by a score of 6-3. Taking the third spot in the Pacific Division, the Oilers needed that win, but the takeaway was the individual seasons of both Draisaitl and Connor McDavid who continue to roll and are the first players this year to reach 100 points. More impressive, they are the first teammates to both reach 100 points in a single season since the 1995-96 campaign almost 30 years ago.
The last time this was done was when the Pittsburgh Penguins saw Mario Lemieux (161 points), Jaromir Jagr (149), and Ron Francis (119). What’s incredible is that this is only the second time in history teammates have done so two years in a row. Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr pulled it off from 1973-74 to 1974-75.
The chemistry between McDavid and Draisaitl is unmistakable. Both push each other to new heights and every season they play together, each seems to get better. McDavid scored his 56th goal of the season and Draisaitl his 44th. It would be the third season in a row that Draisaitl hits 50, should he score six more in the last 14 games of the campaign.
McDavid’s season continues to be among the greatest in NHL history. He now holds the highest single-season point total among active players and he’s got plenty of time to keep adding to his totals. It was just 24 hours before this game that McDavid took the stage in Edmonton at the Juno Awards to a round of MVP chants from the fans in attendance. He’s a shoo-in, regardless of what else he does this season.
The only thing left for this duo is to lead the Edmonton Oilers to the playoffs and a Stanley Cup. It’s what both players truly want, regardless of their individual successes.
