Marner Spoils Canadiens Hopes: Maple Leafs Win 1-0 in Overtime

After a back-and-forth three periods where nothing happened insofar as the scoreboard goes, it didn’t take Mitch Marner long – only 36 seconds into overtime – to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. With the quick overtime goal, Marner spoiled Montreal’s chance to clinch a wild-card playoff spot. It still looks good from the team from Montreal, but it isn’t quite a done deal yet.

Both the Maple Leafs and the Canadiens Had Their Chances

In a game that saw plenty of chances but no finish through regulation, Marner broke the deadlock by jumping off the bench, collecting the puck in the high slot, and snapping a low wrister past Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes for his 26th goal of the season.

Toronto dominated in shots (35-15). The Maple Leafs held firm despite missing two key defensemen (Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jake McCabe) and dressing only five blueliners due to salary cap constraints. Anthony Stolarz stopped all 15 shots for his third shutout of the season, helping his team clinch home-ice advantage in the first round.

The Canadiens Have Had Slow Starts

It was an odd game because the Canadians carried much of the play; however, they didn’t put many shots on the goalie. Montreal’s slow start continued—they managed just two shots in the opening period. Thanks to Dobes, who was outstanding in goal, the Canadiens hung in to collect a single point.

But stopping 34 shots wasn’t enough. After a six-game win streak, the Canadiens have lost back-to-back games and will have to wait longer to secure a playoff spot. The Maple Leafs play again tomorrow night on the road in Carolina, probably with a different lineup than they played tonight.
