It’s official! The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenceman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Toronto’s fifth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. Raddysh has also signed an eight-year contract extension with the Maple Leafs.
The deal comes in at an average annual value of $8.5 million, keeping one of the top offensive defencemen off the open free agent market.
Raddysh, 30, skated in 73 games with Tampa Bay last season, recording a career-high 70 points (22 goals, 48 assists), and added a goal and an assist in seven playoff games. His 22 goals broke the Lightning’s single-season franchise record for a defenceman, and he was tied for second among all NHL blueliners in goals, while finishing sixth in points.
“We are thrilled to add a defenceman of Darren’s caliber to our organization,” said Maple Leafs GM John Chayka. “Darren has emerged as one of the NHL’s premier two-way defensemen, combining elite puck-moving ability with poise, competitiveness, and strong play in all three zones.”
It’s the second move in a week to bolster the Leafs’ blue line, which was a major issue last season and has been an early focus under the new regime. With the newly acquired Emil Andrae and Raddysh now in the mix, and rumors surrounding Morgan Rielly being moved out, next season’s defense corps for the Maple Leafs will look very different.

As for Tampa Bay, the Lightning add an additional pick ahead of this month’s draft.
Is Raddysh Going to Live Up to Expectations?
Raddysh’s breakout season was heavily influenced by an unexpected opportunity in Tampa. After Victor Hedman’s injury, Raddysh was elevated to Tampa Bay’s top power-play unit, which coincided with a major jump in team success.
Previously a depth defenceman and even a healthy scratch, he surged to a career year far beyond his past production. The real worry is that the Leafs just gave an eight-year deal and $68 million to a player who will never reproduce the same level of production. However, Matt Larkin of Daily Faceoff points out that the salary isn’t necessarily the risk it sounds like at first glance. “Some rising-cap perspective: By year 2 of Raddysh deal, cap will be $113.5 million. By that point an $8.5 million AAV will be the equivalent of $6.59 million last season when cap was $88 million.”
He does possess an elite shot and legitimate skill, but he’ll be 38 years old when this deal ends.
Ultimately, Toronto is betting long-term that his rise is sustainable—despite significant risk tied to age, contract length, and the possibility that his production was situationally driven. Greg Wyshynski of ESPN writes, “Darren Raddysh is either Dan Boyle 2.0 (Lightning late bloomer who becomes a solid offensive D-man) or a pending free agent who maximized his earning potential before regressing to the mean. I don’t hate it for the Leafs, who have some PP weaponry that Raddysh can utilize.”
