Maple Leafs Bottom Six Depth Is Far Better Than Fans Think

There’s been plenty of angst about the Maple Leafs’ bottom six depth heading into the playoffs — but I’m not worried. This group might be one of the Maple Leafs’ biggest postseason strengths.

They are probably not settled in their ideal combinations yet — that’s still a moving target. But player for player, this is the most intriguing bottom six Toronto has iced in many seasons.

Who Are the Maple Leafs Bottom Six and What Do They Bring?

Steven Lorentz is a speedy banger with a sneaky offensive touch. He forechecks hard, gets under opponents’ skin, and seems to live in dirty areas. He’s always in the opposition’s face. He can surprise with the odd goal, just at the right time.

Nick Robertson has a scoring ability that feels untapped. He’s got 14 goals despite limited minutes. But give him 15 minutes a night, and he’s easily a 20+ goal-a-season player. He can finish, and he’s not afraid to shoot. He’s also more involved in the 200-foot game.

Pontus Holmberg is one of those players who’s always around the action. Maybe he’s not flashy, but he’s incredibly reliable. He’s strong defensively, rarely makes mistakes, and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He quietly drives play — and he draws penalties with his hustle.

Scott Laughton brings smarts and edge. He might not light the lamp much, but his on-ice IQ is high. He kills plays before they start and always seems to be in position to disrupt and counterattack. His shorthanded ability and awareness add another layer.

David Kämpf is still the defensive anchor. He takes a ton of defensive-zone draws and plays the tough minutes. He’s a true shutdown center and one with playoff experience. He’s even chipped in with key goals when it matters. You know what you’re getting every game — and that consistency is gold at a time when mistakes can kill a team’s chances to advance to the next round..

Bobby McMann is the wild card. Should he be in the top six? The bottom six? He’s earned consideration for both. McMann’s got speed, a heavy shot, and scores in bunches. He’s relentless and as fast as anyone on the team for a big body. That makes him dangerous anywhere in the lineup.

Bobby McMann can score for the Maple Leafs third line.

Patchwork Maple Leafs Depth with Postseason Purpose

Together, this group isn’t a patchwork of depth — they’re pieces with purpose. While other teams hope their bottom six won’t hurt them, the Maple Leafs will count on theirs to help them win. This group is better than hockey pundits think.

This group could also be the difference in a long playoff run. They’re not just there to eat minutes but to change games.
