Longtime Broadcaster Retires After Four Decades With the Blue Jays

Legendary Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez has announced his retirement, closing the book on an extraordinary career in the booth that spanned more than forty years. In a heartfelt statement shared on Friday, February 6, 2026, Martinez reflected on how his journey with the organization began—and how much longer it lasted than he ever imagined.

“It’s hard to believe I came to Toronto in a trade in May of 1981, thinking that would be the end of a very good career,” Martinez said in a statement shared by Rogers Sports & Media. “Little did I know I’d still be connected to the Blue Jays through the 2025 season.”

He called the 2025 campaign “a glorious season,” one that saw him call every postseason game, including Game 7 of the World Series. That broadcast became Sportsnet’s most-watched ever and the highest-rated English-language program in Canada outside the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Martinez said the decision to step away came after spending time with his wife, Arlene, following the series. “After many heartfelt conversations, we both decided it was time for me to step out of the booth and enjoy the years ahead,” he said.

He also took a moment to thank the people who made the journey so meaningful. Martinez expressed deep gratitude to fans, colleagues, and the entire organization.

“It has been a fantastic journey with Sportsnet, the Blue Jays, and the wonderful Blue Jays fans all over the world,” he wrote. “Thank you for embracing me and welcoming my family and me in a way that made us feel like part of yours.”

While he’ll miss the selfies, handshakes, and unwavering support from fans, Martinez said he’s excited to cheer on the Jays from the other side of the microphone.

Those Connected to Buck Martinez Showed Their Love

Tributes poured in following the announcement.

Sportsnet President Greg Sansone called Martinez “a legend in baseball,” saying his voice had become “synonymous with summer” and praising his unmatched passion for the game.

Blue Jays President and CEO Mark Shapiro said, “Buck has been one of the most prominent figures in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays, dedicating decades to the game he loves and to this organization as a player, manager, and broadcaster.” He added, “Buck has connected generations of fans with his passion, insight, and unparalleled storytelling. His legacy extends far beyond the microphone, and he will always hold a special place in the hearts of Canadian baseball fans.”

Before becoming a broadcasting staple, Martinez enjoyed a 17-year MLB playing career with the Royals, Brewers, and Blue Jays. He joined the broadcast booth in 1987 as a Blue Jays color analyst and went on to call more than 4,000 games across two stints with the club, along with national and international work for ESPN, TBS, and MLB International. Along the way, he earned Sports Emmy Awards and received the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s Jack Graney Award in 2023.

Although he had hoped to be part of the Blue Jays’ 50th season in 2027, Martinez said the time felt right to move on.

“It’s time to pass the torch,” he said. “Enjoy 2026 and beyond. I’ll see you down the road.”
